Another Homeless Person Dies Print E-mail

Isn’t it amazing how the economy is upside down, going sideways and doing flips daily but yet our faith maintains our daily walk so that we do not stumble or fall into the ways and trappings of the world.

However, it is a sad day when the assistance to the most vulnerable in our society is impacted by zealous folks in Washington who do not recognize the human struggles and tragedies that effect those right here in the United States of America. We are a giving government and a giving people but sometimes we fail to recognize that the immediate mission needs are in our backyard. If we strengthen the will and desire of those like the gentleman pictured in the enclosed photo, then we are able to give more to those in need no matter there place of existence.

The gentleman pictured on the billboard photo is Michael Dawson. Michael was not a perfect person…he had his weaknesses and faults (as we all do). Oh, did I say the word “was”? Michael passed away during the early morning hours of Thursday, September 25th, 2011 laying on a flattened card board box, with a blanket to cover himself on the grounds of Mill Point Park in Hampton. As we arrived at the park to pick him up to take to the VA Emergency Room, as was his request to us two days prior, we saw the area cordoned off with the yellow police crime scene tape. Thus, Michael is “Homeless No More”.

Michael gave his life to our God over a year ago at Bethel AME Church in Hampton and he worked and worshipped there often, no matter his earthly condition or appearance. In this picture, we see the bottle of water and the tennis shoe. What a statement…a man that is tired and yet we judge, him and others, knowing that we have not walked in his “shoe(s)”. Is there any explanation needed for the words “Give To End Homelessness”?

Why were these words used. Because this year our government deemed it not necessary to restore nearly $19,000.00 of FEMA Funding to HELP, Inc., to support feeding the homeless during this upcoming critical time of the year, with the Night’s Welcome Winter Shelter Program and stocking the food pantry that serves families and individuals in need. Why? Hampton and Newport News did not qualify for funding under the new guidelines set up by the National Emergency Food and Shelter Board.

Michael was tired. Michael did not have the nutrition necessary to sustain. Yes, Michael had issues. But, Michael was in Hampton, Virginia in the United States of America…not on another continent or in another country. There are and will be many more Michael’s in the Hampton, Virginia area.

“Give To End Homelessness”

Our HELP, Inc. staff had t-shirts made with the image of Michael on it and formed a TEAM Michael in his memory at the recent HELP WALK-A-THON on Saturday, September 24th, 2011. We enjoyed a miracle on that day…as it was raining all over the city and area, we enjoyed a wonderful morning in the Phoebus/Ft. Monroe area for our walk. It is still not to late to make contributions to the HELP WALK-A-THON. Help us to “end homeless” in the area, one life - one family at a time.
