H.E.L.P. House Family Shelter provides emergency shelter to families with children. H.E.L.P. House is a five bedroom home built in 1883 and since that time it has been remodeled and renovated many times. H.E.L.P. purchased the property in 1985 with a Community Block Grant from the City of Hampton to provide refuge and comfort to a countless number of families that found themselves homeless and in need of a place for a new start in life.

The Tidewater Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. (TC-TAI) was introduced to the H.E.L.P. Shelter by Mr. T.J. Spann, President of TC-TAI, and his family. Soon after his family’s volunteer activity at “A Night’s Welcome Program”, which is a partnership with the local churches to supply meals and to provide respite for the homeless during the winter months, Mr. Spann, recognized the need in the community. Clothing items were needed for those who could not afford to purchase necessary garments; business attire for interviews, work uniforms, or clothes to keep warm.

In 1999, Mr. Spann suggested to the Programs and Community Service Committee of the Tuskegee Airmen Chapter that they conduct an annual clothing drive for the family shelter. Since then, the H.E.L.P. Shelter has been blessed to receive needed clothing items for homeless individuals and families at the shelter.

The Tidewater Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. is proud to proclaim and continue the legacy of the famed Tuskegee Airmen who served our country during World War II and beyond through their community service projects. In addition to conducting an annual clothing drive for the H.E.L.P. Family Shelter, the Chapter also provides education assistance/scholarship awards and Youth Program.  For more than 25-years, the Chapter has presented qualified High School Seniors in the Hampton Roads area (who post 3.0 grade point averages and higher) with $1,000, $1,500 or more.

The thoughtful character of this group of Airmen who distinguished themselves as American Heroes has been a benefit to many who were born years after their initial triumph during World War II. There are many more groups and organizations who recognize the needs in our community and who contribute their time and talents to make life better for those whom they may never meet or know…but, they do know they represent fellow brothers and sisters who are in need.

If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. 1 John 3:17-18
