I quickly ran outside. I felt the cold wind brush against my face. There was no time to grab a sweater. I held the locket tightly in my hands. I felt like I was going to freeze, but I did not turn back.

I stayed on the cold dirt trail, wearing nothing on my feet. I heard the waves from the shore of the river. The water looked so freezing. I walked faster, until I saw a small cemetery at the bottom of the hill.

Only about fifteen people were buried there. I finally found the gravestone that said Grace James. A torn piece a paper was on it. I read: “You have found my gravestone. Dig a little hole, put the locket inside, and cover it. And I will deliver a message to you.”

I did what the note said. When I had finished burying the locket, I stood up and waited. Nothing happened. I got colder and colder. I felt like I was going to faint. I lay down and tried to conserve as much body heat as possible.

Suddenly, I felt a wind as cold as ice blow over me. But suddenly, I felt warmer. The wind forced my eyes open. The cold wind was visible, turning the color of a silvery white. It shined so bright, I had to squint. Inside the wind, I saw a girl appear. The wind disappeared, and the girl stood there, looking at me. She finally spoke. “Thank you for rescuing me. Now that we are both here, I have a question to ask.”

She looked at me with hope. “What is it?” I asked.

“Will you let me live your life, just until midnight tomorrow, I miss being alive. I want to know how it feels like.” her eyes sparkled.

I could tell she was determined. I hesitated, and replied, “Yes, I will.”

“Thank you so much!” she replied.

“You might like being a ghost like this. You can float, you are never in pain, you are never scared, and you are never cold.”

“Alright, let’s switch until midnight tomorrow,” I said.

The girl raised up her hand a little. The wind came back, circling around us. The girl disappeared. And I started to disappear. I saw my legs fading away, and my skin turning pale. Suddenly, the wind ran straight into my eyes. Everything turned white. And I fell unconscious. When I woke up, I saw the girl walking away. She wasn’t pale anymore, and she had legs. I looked at myself. I looked like smoke! I was a ghost! I looked around. I decided to see if I could float through things. I floated over to a tree. And I easily went through it. I floated to the top. It was fun being able to float.

But I started to hear people talking.  There were more ghosts! They seemed to look perfectly normal. They floated through the gravestones, busily floating back and forth. I decided to talk, too. I floated over to them, wondering what it was like to have a perfectly normal conversation with a ghost.

To be continued…
