Response to "Rules are Rules" by Erica Wagner, http://jamesriverjournal.com/erica-wagner/17697-rules-are-rules.html
and letter from Eddie Deerfield, "Hampton Denies Library Cards" http://jamesriverjournal.com/opinion/17702-hampton-denies-library-cards.html
Hampton libraries offer ways for students to obtain cards.
Hampton welcomes our students to apply for library cards. Currently, more than 20,000 of our youth hold cards and are active library users. Parents do not have to present at the library for a minor to obtain a card; however, the form does require the signature of a parent or guardian. Students are welcome to take the form home, get it signed, and bring it back. Also, until someone obtains a card, they are welcome to use the resources in the library facilities.
Here's why we think it's important: The City of Hampton has always been respectful of the rights of parents and their role as the primary teachers of their children.

It is a shame that a 17 year old young student cannot get a library card without his parents being there. Just wanting the card tells me that this young man in interested in reading and obviously does good work in school. Why can’t he get a Library Card.

The day’s events were centered on the question of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream, “Is The Dream Over?” The day’s events were kicked off by a community forum panel that included Council Woman Tina Vick and her daughter, David Squires of the Daily Press, Dan Curran of the JamesRiverJournal.Com, and Dr. Kim Allen of the MLK Center.
While Dr. Kim Allen brought attention to current issues of voter access to the poles and current bills in Richmond she felt could lead to suppress some votes; little else was offered.

As 2012 quickly approaches and we get ready to ring in the New Year, we look back at a year on this city, and everything that has happened. We have a city council who has irresponsibly spent money like it is candy not caring about the taxpayers who pay their salaries.

To the Editor,
The attacks on our Constitution continue, and unfortunately they often come from well-meaning conservatives.

HAMPTON CITY COUNCIL MEETING
14 December 2011
Good evening Mayor Ward, Council Members, Ms. Bunting, Ms. Hudson;
As a resident and taxpayer of this city, I have been coming before this Council to exercise my rights to speak of the way Council does business. The past couple of months have proved beyond a reasonable doubt that this Council does not listen or care to what its citizens have to say.

In a show of support, citizens attended the York County Economic Development Authority (EDA) Committee meeting on December 13th, asking the Board to renew the lease of the “Stars and Stripes,” expiring at year’s end, at Riverwalk Landing (RWL), in historic Yorktown. The seven member board (five present), made up of skilled and intellectual citizens seemed NOT interested. At the meeting close and appropriate time to discuss the lease, in the member comment time, each just wished the other Merry Christmas. The “Stars and Stripes” owner had asked to be included in the meeting (agenda). This exclusion was not an oversight but intentional.

I cannot believe that a great American like Rush Limbaugh is being attacked for using the term "uppity-ism" while discussing our First Lady on his radio show. I'm sure it's a term he uses frequently, like when he gets his shoes shined, his yard raked, or his car washed. I'm certain he meant no disrespect.
Limbaugh has several good qualities. He is a perfectionist! His first two marriages didn't turn out so well. Probably uppity women. Other perfectionists like Donald Trump and Newt Gingrich believe the third time's the charm. Ah, perfection-driven people all!

Dear York Supervisors, I have taken a week or so from the November 16th BoS meeting, to reflect and measure my reaction to the recent zoning proposals, discussions, and actions taken. I remain very concerned with the direction the county is headed and gravely concerned with your actions as our Board of Supervisors.
